Osteopathy & Musculo-Skeletal Medicine

Osteopathy & Musculo-skeletal medicine is a manual therapy whereby the skilled osteopath  uses their hands to palpate, diagnose, and treat , without the use of drugs. The title of Osteopath is protected by law and to call yourself an osteopath, you either need to be a medical doctor and have further undergone training in osteopathy or to have followed a four year degree level education. You do not need a GP to refer you for osteopathic treatment. Osteopathy is suitable for the whole family from children to the elderly. Osteopathy is based on a set of healing principles to help the patient return back to health for example, that the balance of health depends on the skeleton, muscles. ligaments, nerves and the connective tissues all functioning smoothly together ,and for the body to function in ultimate health, its structure needs to be correct.

An osteopath will aim to restore your body to a state of balance by touch, physical manipulation, stretching & massage to enhance the mobility of joints , nerve, and blood supply to the tissues and thereby helping your body's own healing mechanisms to rebalance your health. Advice on posture and exercise may also be given in order to enable quicker recovery and prevent a relapsing of your symptoms. Most private health insurance companies including BUPA cover osteopathy treatment. It is worth checking with your insurance company to see if they will cover all or part of your payments for treatment Osteopathy is a system of diagnosing, treating and preventing a wide range of health problems. Through hands on treatment, osteopathy helps the body to heal, restores normal function and relieves symptoms. It does not involve the use of drugs or surgery.  By keeping all of the bones and tissues of the body loose and in optimal natural alignment, the body is able to function or heal itself more readily. Osteopathy is also applied to painful conditions including headaches, fibromyalgia, arthritis and sciatica.

Osteopathy can also treat common conditions such as neck, shoulder, knee, and low back conditions & pain resulting from acute and chronic injuries. Many patients with injuries and pain from car accidents, work, and sports related injuries benefit from osteopathic manipulative therapy as it enables them to have a more freer range of movement. By optimizing the structure and function of the body, the natural healing process of the body is frequently stimulated to improve other health concerns that one may have.

    Q & A

What to expect at our Health and Hair Osteopathic and Musculo-skeletal clinic with our fully qualified practitioners?

What is the Case History ?

Your therapist will begin the consultation by taking a full case history. You will be asked details about your symptoms, your body generally, your medical history and aspects of your life that may be impacting on your problem. For instance, your occupation, hobbies and social situation can all provide important insights into your problem.

    How is the examination ?
Your practitioner will then ask you to undress to examine your body structures. This includes assessing your posture and asking you to perform some slow gentle movements to gain an understanding of how your body and the related structures are moving. We will examine your joints and feel the tone of your muscles in order to formulate a diagnosis.  We will then discuss their findings with you, and discuss the options for treatment. In the rare event that treatment is not advisable, the therapist will explain why, and may refer you to another healthcare professional.

    How is the treatment?
Treatment is safe, gentle, and generally pain free. Techniques used are highly specific to the patient, and often include soft tissue massage, stretching, articulation of joints and manipulative techniques. As part of an ongoing plan, we may recommend lifestyle changes, postural changes, stretches, and exercises.

    What to wear ?
In the majority of cases you will be asked to undress to your underwear so that you can be assessed ‘holistically ’ and also so that all your musculo-skeletal structures can be palpated effectively. Please wear sports kit or underwear that you will feel comfortable in, ladies are recommended to wear a bra underneath. You are welcome to bring your partner with you.

    What happens after treatment ?
Every patient reacts differently to treatment. Some patients often recognize an instant increase in function. You may find that you are sore for a day or two after treatment; this is not unusual as your body adapts to the treatment after a few days of healing reaction.

    Follow ups?...

Your Osteopath will give you an indication as to the number and frequency of treatments required for your problem.at the first session. Your treatment may need to change from session to session according to your body’s response. Things that are working can be repeated, and new techniques/therapy tried if progress is slow.

Generally our examination and treatment is generally gentle but a “manipulation” may be required. For this your consent is required and it will be discussed with you at the time. If you are not happy to go ahead then alternatives will be found.

Your treatment plan in general will be discussed with you at your consultations and your consent and agreement sought. If you are not happy with any aspect then please let us know. In the first instance you should be able to discuss this with your therapist.
